Birthday Outfit #1

Top: H&M  Skirt: ASOS Tights & Shoes: Target

First of all I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving, a good black Friday (if you’re into that), and a Happy Hanukkah. Anyway my birthday was the 16th and due to a work meeting early in the morning the day after (boo hiss), my birthday kind of got extended into a birthday week. I figured since I’ve had a severe lack of posts lately that I’d extend all the outfits I wore on various birthday outings into a couple posts. But fret not dear readers! I do have other non-b-day related outfits to share as well. Anyway here’s the first outfit I wore out to dinner the day before my birthday. I wore this skirt last year on my birthday and having worn it a few times since, I think this is the best i’ve styled it so far. Even though it’s black on black the different textures save it from being boring. That said I don’t nearly ware this skirt enough and am dedicated to putting it in heavier rotation in my wardrobe.  I got the coat free from a clothing swap years ago and it’s my favorite dressed up coat. Although I have yet to watch a single episode of Scandal (it’s on my Netflix to do list) I am aware that thanks to Ms. Olivia Pope statement coats are having a serious moment right now. I think my coat kind of fits in that category, It makes my outfit look so put together and professional I kinda love it.

Wedding Reception Style

Top & Skirt: Thrift  Tights: Target  Shoes: Urban Outfitters
A former supervisor of mine got married a couple weeks ago  and a bunch of my co-workers and I were invited to the wedding/reception.  Even though I have a ton of clothes whenever I have some special event to go to I feel like I have nothing to wear and should buy something new. I felt like that for the wedding and almost bought a new dress, but decided last minute that I could probably put together a great outfit with pieces already in my wardrobe. And What do you know I did! I thrifted this skirt  a million years ago but have never worn it, mostly because it’s a little dressy and I don’t really go to many “dressy” events. So when I was going through my closet to find something I decided to dust it off and give it a fine debut. I had no idea what to wear with the skirt top wise, as many of the tops either didn’t go with it or just didn’t give off the vibe I was going for. So what’s a girl to do? go to pinterest of course! after searching “tulle skirt outfit” in pinterest I came upon a bunch of outfits and saw one with a lace top and thought aww a lace top would be perfect I wish I … Oh wait I totally have one! Thankfully the top and skirt turned out to be a match made in closet heaven. I got a few compliments on my “dress”, so I think it was a success. And I was proud that I stuck to my guns and used things I already owned instead of buying something new.

Defying Gravity

Top &Shoes : Target  Skirt: ASOS
I wore this to see Gravity in 3D. It was my first 3D movie and I can’t recommend it enough it’s really good and the 3D really enhances the experience instead of detracting from it. I went to see the movie the same day as my interview and decided to keep the blouse I was wearing (because it’s soo  cute) and dress it up a bit for night. Plus I was feeling a bit fancy ( as I had straight hair for the first time in like 3 years) so I dressed up a bit. This was taken just 3 weeks ago when it was warm enough to still go bare legged, unfortunately it seems tights weather has taken over, possibly for good. Winter is coming. :(.

Interview style gone right

Blazer: Thrift  Pants: ASOS Top & Shoes: Target

I’ve gone on a variety of interviews since starting this blog but have never actually blogged the outfits. I have a hard time, like i’m sure many people do, dressing for interviews. I want to look professional and mature but also look myself. This is especailly hard since most interview appropriate clothing are things I don’t wear regularly (blazers, suits, etc.). So every time I get an interview I comb my wardrobe for pieces, determine I have nothing to wear, buy something and think it looks ok, then I take outfit photos and realize just how awkward I really look. It’s a struggle. I always feel like a kid playing Business woman instead of professional highly qualified candidate that you should totally hire.
Anyway I recently had another interview and was determined to find a professional outfit that I looked and felt good in and didn’t make me feel like I was playing dress up. So after work one day I went wondering around the mall to find interview appropriate clothing that would look good, but still make me feel like me. Of course I didn’t end up finding ANYTHING. I also found out why i’m not a big blazer fan, it is so incredibly hard to find a blazer that fits well. Since I’m short a lot of blazers are too long and just look too boxy, it’s a lot harder than you would think to find a blazer that is fitted, not too boxy and fits. Anyway after finding nothing at the mall  I headed to the thrifts and ended up finding the above blazer. When I found the blazer I thought a cute blouse and a nice pair of black pants would pair swimmingly with it. So I headed over to target and found this blouse, I also bought some black dress pants but couldn’t find a sewing kit to hem them in time so just ended up wearing an older pair of black dress pants that I wear for work. In the end I think this is the first interview outfit I actually really like. I felt like myself just more professional, which is always my goal. Oh and if your wondering I just straightened my hair to see how it looked. I hadn’t straightened it for three years and was a little bored with my hair and curious what it would look like so I did. I’m keeping it for a week just to change it up, but I’ll be back to curly next week.

All Black Everythig

Top: H&M Skirt & Necklace : ASOS Shoes: Target Bracelet: Nasty Gal
I wore this last month to go to a club for my friend’s birthday. Looking back I should have injected more color into the outfit as it was Gay Pride weekend here in Minneapolis and we were at a Gay bar, but I’ve really been into black lately. I also should have worn a short sleeved shirt, It was kinda cold outside so I made a last minute long sleeve shirt decision that I immediately regretted when I went to the second floor of the club and it was sweltering. Your live and you learn I guess. Anyway I wore those heels all night, which is kind of an accomplishment as I’m not much of a heel girl. Those booties  have a very thick heel and are kind of like wearing a wedge so they’re pretty comfortable, my feet did start to hurt towards the end of the night but not too badly. Anyway I’m gonna try and wear more heels, I have a really cute pair I want to wear I just have to figure out where. Anyway the club was packed and we definitely had some interesting run ins. I didn’t dance as much as I wanted to but I did have a really good time.

Fourth O’ July style

Top: target skirt: ASOS shoes: DV by dolce vita
This Fourth of July I was grateful for many things, but mostly that I didn’t feel like death. The day before I felt awful so it was soo nice to just be able to be out and about like a normal person. Anyway I worked for most of the fourth and didn’t really have concrete plans until after work at about 7pm.  My friend that I usually go see fireworks with was busy working so I went with a good friend from work. Luckily my friend lives really close to the (Mississippi) river, which is one of the places that has fireworks in/ around Minneapolis. So I parked at her house and we walked to the river. We watched fireworks from the stone arch bridge and then has some delicious food truck food. The weather was amazing  and it was a really fun night.
On to the outfit! I had a couple outfits in mind for this festive occasion but decided to go with this one after figuring out where I was going. Last year I went all red, white and blue and felt a little hokey. You can do patriotic really well and cool or you can do it badly and look like an elementary school teacher rocking a Fourth of July themed sweater vest. I had a tamed down outfit picked out that still had red, white, and blue but decided I just wasn’t in the mood for it. So I went with this asos skirt I recently purchased and a simple white scoop neck top. I like the outfit although in hindsight white wasn’t the best color for my food truck excursion. It could use a little more something but it was pretty hot out and it was a nice easy breezy outfit for the fourth.

A Sweet Escape

So a couple weeks ago (Valentines Day week to be exact) I packed up and went to Florida for the week. My mom got a few weeks off and wanted to go somewhere and when I was able to get a week off so we decided we should go somewhere warm, so we went to Florida.  We kind of went all over Florida, we landed in Fort Lauderdale and drove to our hotel in Islamadora, Fl (one of the Florida Keys), then we spent the next day in Key West and drove (8hrs) to Orlando. In Orlando we did the usual, Disney World and Universal Studios for 3 days (which really isn’t a lot of time, people usually spend a week doing just that) and then we went to Tampa where we went on a tour of Frank Lloyd Wright buildings at Florida Southern University and a tour of (mostly) Mid Century modern houses in Sarasota, Fl. All in all it was an incredibly busy but fun vay-cay. Whenever I go back I’ll probably do less and spend more time on the beach, but it was a really nice trip and a nice break from winter.
I did take pictures, but there are so many I think i’ll break them up into three posts. I also have a couple outfit posts from the trip so i’ll include those when appropriate. I don’t have as many outfit posts, as a lot of the Orlando time my outfits were more functional than fashion-y, it also was a tad cold (like 50/60 degrees but with rain) some of the days so a lot of the pictures of me during those days are of me in a hoodie, which isn’t real exciting.
I figured I’d  get the outfit post out of the way first. I wore this the first full day we spent in Florida. I like it but i’m not in love with it, not really sure why.

I guess Islamadora is known for it’s good fishing so our hotel had lots of docks for boats and fishing,

These little cabins were also part of our hotel. Aren’t they cute?

 Key West.

When we finally got to Key West we had to find parking, it was really packed when we got there, and we went immediately to Ernest Hemingway’s house, one of our must see sites on the trip.

The Hemingway House

The house had some really cool light fixtures:

Hemingway was a cat person and was really fond of these extra-toed cats. Now the decendents of these cats occupy the house and grounds, it’s really cute.

the house had some amazing bathrooms

You know just hanging out on the display thing

I’m obsessed with this bathroom, isn’t it amazing? I want it!
Look at that funky tile. momma like.

I told you i liked that bathroom

The ground were really beautiful too, though the ground smelled a bit like cat pee…

Hemingway’s carridge house/ study. I love the way this room is decorated.

The cats really do run this house

Urinal turned cat watering hole. Hemingway took it from his favorite bar Sloppy Joe’s (see below) when they moved to a new location. His then wife added the water fixture and tile to pretty it up.

We found a cat that looked like my Olive man so I had to take a few pictures of it.
shortly after this the cat on the left pounced on the cat on the right, it was pretty cute.

Oliver? no, but still cute

All cats love boxes

So a little over a month ago (November 16th) I turned the ripe old age of 25. It feels good to be 25 but also a bit odd since I’m now a mere 5 years away from 30, whaa? As you know, I’ve been lusting over leather skirts since the beginning of fall. Asos had a pleated leather skirt in it’s main range that I fell in love with but at $150 or so dollars I just couldn’t bring myself to buy it. By the time I figured I could take the plunge the skirt sold out in black and was only available in navy. I like the leather skirt trend, but I just can’t spend 150 dollars on colored leather.
So in late October I decided to get an asos faux leather skirt that was only 50 dollars as a birthday present to myself. Then Hurricain sandy hit and my package never made it to my house. Asos e-mailed me and said that due to the hurricain they had to send all the packages from their NY shipper back to the UK to inspect the packages and see if they’re able to send them or not. My package was  a total goner. Luckily at that same time Asos curve put up the exact same skirt I had been lusting over earlier in the fall in their range and I just so happened to have a 25% off code, so I decided to go ahead and splurge on the more expensive skirt.
And I have to say I LOVE this skirt. It’s amazing! I’m soo happy with it and so glad I got to spend my first night as a 25 year old in this fabulous skirt. Also it’s real leather (thus the higher price tag), I just love it so. I would have worn it with these cute black booties I bought earlier that day but was worried about my feet giving out halfway through the night, as they have a bit of a heel.  I totally forgot about my knee high flat black boots, so I opted for my trusted  brown flat ones instead. I’m not in love with this outfit and am seriously looking for better tops to pair with this skirt. I should be wearing this skirt again soon and will hopefully come up with something I’m more in love with.  Anyway I wore this out on my birthday to go watch Drag Queens and dance like a drunken maniac, it was so much fun y’all. 25 will definitely be full of a lot more dancing, I guarantee it.

Ps. Anyone else read leather in the voice of stella from project runway? I. Can’t. Stop. Doing. It. Observe:

Shirt & Shoes: Thrifted  Pants: Dorothy Perkins Cardigan: Target (old)
I wore this to my internship yesterday. I  just thought it up on the fly and I have to say I kind of like it, Sort of subtle pattern mixing. I should have some more outfits coming soon, I just have to take pictures of them.

Open House

As I mentioned in a previous post I went a wee bit overboard during labor day sales a spent a little more then I meant to. One of the places I spent some change was Dorothy Perkins. I’ve known about DP for awhile but hadn’t actually purchased anything until recently. I decided to buy because I fell in love with some faux leather pants they had. I got both of the packages I had ordered a couple weeks ago and my Dorothy Perkins orders were a wee bit underwhelming. Not because of quality or anything just because, despite ordering my normal size, everything was too big. I’ve only ordered from one other UK retailer (ASOS) but I’ve had the same “problem” with them. I suppose I should have googled online and looked to see how DP sizing was, but I didn’t. This isn’t a huge problem, I mean better the clothes be too big than too small. But it’s a little more irritating since, unlike ASOS, Dorothy Perkins doesn’t have free US returns so I have to pay to send it back. Really it was just dissapointing that the one things I was really looking forward to, the faux leather pants, didn’t fit.
But, of the four things I bought I did end up keeping two. One is the top above. It’s actually a peplum top but I’m not a huge fan of peplums over skirts, unless they’re pencil skirts, so I tucked it in. I probably could have sized down in this shirt too but it fits well enough and I think it’ll shirk a bit when I wash it. I wore this outfit to a back to school open house at my internship a couple weeks ago. I spent most of the open house downstairs greeting guest, having them sign in, get name tags and directing them to the office. I had a pretty good time, though it  got pretty slow towards the end. I wasn’t exactly sure what to wear, and didn’t really have any idea what I was going to wear until a few minutes before I left the house, but I knew I wanted something casual yet dressy. I think I pulled it off pretty well.
