Age of Aquarius

Top: Macy’s  Jeans: Gap  Shoes: thrifted
I wore this outfit to a gallery opening my friend was in. This shirt reminds me of hair and every time I wear it I feel very hippie chic. I love this top but ever since I bought it I’ve had a hard time styling it. It’s tunic length so it’s long but no quite long enough to be worn as a dress. I’ve worn it with short leggings and with pants. I’m not really taken with either.  I wore it with these skinnies to see and was OK with it at the time but after taking pictures am not a big fan of the outfit. I could wear the top with a black mini skirt, maybe black skinnies, but the best idea I came up with was black shorts. Unfortunately I don’t really have any shorts, especially black shorts,  and since summer is coming to an end it’s just one of those things I’ll have to put on the list for next year.
I still have a few more summer outfits to post so you should see some more regular posts at least for a little while. I’m still with my internship but my work and internship are slowing down a bit so I’m going to try and post more this fall. I miss posting, I just need to get back in the swing of things!

To the Max(i)

Skirt: PLNDR Shirt: Thrifted Sandals: DV by Dolce Vita

Sorry, again for the no-posting situation I have a few outfits lined up so posting should be back on track from now on. Since summer is slowly slipping away I’m trying to pack in all the  warm weather outfits  before the temperature drops. After being obsessed with Maxi skirts earlier this year I haven’t really worn mine much this summer. But I have to say they’re super fun.  You just feel super feminine in them and kinda fancy, I think it’s the long length.  Either way I’ll definitely be wearing more maxi’s from now on! I would have worn a statement necklace with this but I was going for casual and I just thought the necklace I had in mind seemed a little too dressy. That said I really like the simplicity of the outfit.

Finally the always lovely Beth from The Fashionable Adventures of Bethie the Boo gave me a Liebster award forever ago but due to my impromptu  I never did it. The Liebster award  “is given to upcoming bloggers who have 200 followers or less.  The meaning of Liebster in German is sweetest, kindest, nicest, dearest, beloved, lovely, kind, pleasant, valued, cute, endearing and welcome”.

The rules for the award:
1. Each person must post 11 things about themselves
2. Answer the question the tagger set for you plus create 11 questions for the people you’ve tagged to answer.
3. Choose 11 people and link them in your post.
4. Go to their page and tell them.
5. No tag backs.

 1. I’m not real crafty. I like to do art stuff but I don’t really do it much. I’m really into papier mache and if the craft is easy enough i’d be down to do it, but generally I’m not very crafty. I sort of realized this while looking through DIY/ Craft-ish blogs and looking at the stuff people do and thinking ” meh looks like too much work.” Maybe I should just say I’m a lazy crafter.

2. I suck at makeup. Though ocassionally I do attempt to wear makeup it’s not an everyday thing for me, mostly because I’ve never taken the time to actually be good at it. In middle and highschool my friends never were into makeup so I just never forced myself to learn. Now i’m just lazy, though I always say sometime I’ll actually learn. maybe.

3.  I love to dance. I took dance lessons, ballet for a little while but mostly Tap and Jazz, from 3rd to 12th grade. This also means there are far too many embarrassing pictures of me in dance costumes and this is part of the reason I had (until recently) an aversion to sequins (too many scratchy dance costumes).

4. If I was any animal I’d probably be a cat. I was actually asked “if you were any animal what would you be and why?” in an interview once and immediately thought cat. I think I just have more of a cat personality, I like to socialize and be friendly but sometimes I just want to be left alone. Plus who doesn’t want to get take naps whenever they feel like it?

5. I’m a crier. Yes I’ll admit it, ever since high school my hormones make me cry at the most ridiculous sentimental moments. If there’s a touching moment during a tv show, movie etc I’ll probably shed a tear, or at least try to blink one away. I don’t like it, mainly because while my body is crying i’m thinking “seriously? I’m crying at this?”, but it still happens.  Anyway I’ve begrudgingly accepted it. I’ve heard after giving birth some women get even more emotional, which means if I ever give birth I’ll be a total mess afterward.

6. I was never an athlete (I took dance that’s about as athletic as it got) but I love to watch figure skating and gymnastics, even when it’s not the Olympics. I think that’s probably why i like the Olympics, all the sports I’m actually into get the spotlight.

7.  I still love cartoons. I have a weekly DVR time for both Adventure Time and Regular show, I love Scooby Doo and am a sucker for 90’s cartoons. Somethings from childhood just seem to stick, I guess. Plus who doesn’t like Adventure Time, it’s mathmatical!

8. My favorite book, so far, is Beloved by Toni Morrison, she’s also my favorite author. She even spoke at my freshman commencement in college, It was super cool.

9. One day I want to take a road trip down route 66 and see all the cool kitchy sites and stay in the kitchy old hotels.

10. I’m not a gleek. I tried so hard to like Glee. I watched most of the second season etc. I just can’t get into it. On paper it’s perfect, but something about it just doesn’t get me. Maybe it’s because I was friends with real theater nerds in high school, maybe it’s just way too self aware for me. Whatever it is I just can’t get into it.

11. My biggest pet peeve is smacking/talking with your mouth full. I don’t know why it bothers me but I just find it gross. I can sometimes ignore it if i’m in a really good mood but most of the time it kills me.

Beth’s Questions:

1. What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Blackberry . When I was abroad my host family had kind of a sweet tooth and we occasionally went out for ice cream. Most of the ice cream there is more like sorbet then like the ice cream here in the states, which was fine with me since I love sorbet. Anyway they had a lot of cool flavors some of the best being chocolate and coconut, but blackberry was definitely my favorite.
2. If money was no object, where would you like to travel most?
Everywhere, If I had unlimited funds. But if I had to choose one place it would probably be Cuba. I wanted to study abroad there but there’s only one program in the US that goes there and you have to go to that college to be eligible. I just find Cuba kind of fascinating, It’s culture and history all intrigue me, and I would love to go and visit. Hopefully someday soon the US will end the stupid embargo and I can go legally from the US and not have to stop in Canada or Mexico first. But even if the embargo is never repealed I’m totally going, someday.
3. Describe to me your perfect day off.
My perfect day off would probably include a road trip to some town/place I’ve never been to, exploring the local flavor and, of course, a little antiquing/thrifting.
4. What’s your favorite guilty pleasure?
Reality TV. I love it a lot. I watch so much bad TV it’s almost embarrassing, almost. I’ve probably seen every episode of every housewife franchise ever, yea I’m serious. I should really be more ashamed of that then I am but what can I say? I like bad TV, it’s my thing.
5. What is your favorite season?
Spring. When I was a kid I used to love watching as the snow melted and made little streams in the ground. I also like it because it’s (usually) perfect weather, not too hot not too cold, and it leads to summer!
6. (Stealing Amanda’s) Top 5 Favorite Movies. Go.
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, The Royal Tenenbaums,  Clueless, Grizzly man (yes it’s sad but it’s still a really good movie), Shrek, Traffic. I’m super deep,ya’ll. I’m also more of a TV person.
7. What is your least favorite household chore?
Dishes. They. Never. End!
8. Coffee or tea or neither?
I like both it just depends on what i’m in the mood for/ if I need caffeine.
9. Last book you read?  Do you recommend it?
The last book I read was Catching Fire, the 2nd Hunger Games book. The book was ok. I liked the first book a lot more. I’m not a huge fan of Peeta which makes the 2nd book a little irritating (trying not to give away anything). I’d recommend it if you read the first book and liked it, but I’d definitely not as good. Hopefully the 3rd book will be better, when i finally get it from the library.  I just watched Battle Royale and realized how much it’s similar to hunger games, except no one in hunger games kills themselves. Battle Royale (the movie) was gory but not very scary, a lot of the fight scenes looked choreographed which kinda took you out of the movie and the writing was pretty bad. But it was an interesting movie. I’d recommend it too, you can watch it on netflix.
10. What was your favorite childhood toy?
Barbie anything, I was really into barbie. My favorite Christmas present was a barbie dream house, I still have it.
11. Do you have any bad habits?
probably just not exercising as much as I should.

My Questions:
1. What are your top 5 favorite books?
2. If you were an animal what animal would you be?
3  How would you describe your style in a word or phrase.
4. what’s your favorite sport?
5. what’s your favorite childhood memory?
6.what are the first 10 songs that come on when you put your ipod/ itunes on shuffle?
7.(stealing from Beth’s list) what are your top 5 movies?
8. do you have any fears/phobias? what are they and why?
9. what’s something about you that would surprise us?
10.  what’s your biggest pet peeve?
11. (stealing from Beth’s list again) if you could go anywhere in the world where would you go and why?

I’m not going to tag anyone but if you want to join in please do so and let me know! I’d love to see your answers!

A Break from the Silence

The skirt has pockets!

Everything: Thrifted

Sorry for the crickets last week. I’ve actually been super busy but haven’t been wearing any blog worthy outfits. I got an internship a few weeks ago with a local non-profit so now most of my days off I’m interning. This is actually great news for the blog, since I’m not just roaming around in my PJ’s. Anyway last week the company I’m interning for moved to a different location so I telecommuted, which essentially means I sat on the couch making lots and lots of graphs in my Pj’s lounge wear. Anyway this week I’m back to actual commuting so I should have some more outfits coming. My internship office is pretty casual so my options are pretty wide, within reason of course.
I had an outfit picked out for today but scraped it when I woke up and it was raining. I was contemplating wearing pants but decided on a skirt when I saw it was supposed to be 91 today. I thrifted this skirt a couple weeks ago at a Savers 50% off sale but I didn’t really try it on. I like the skirt but I think I could probably shorten it a little.  I’m kind of obsessed with these shoes. I had been looking for some Minnetonka Moccasins for awhile. I hadn’t had any luck and was thinking about buying some new when I found these at Savers. I think they may be a wee bit too small for me, as I’ve worn them a couple times and they’re still not broken in, but I’m determined to make them work.

Taliesin Outfit #2 :Pattern Mixing like a fiend

Oliver likes to jump on me when I seem to be randomly standing around.
Top: Trifted Skirt: Jason Wu for Target Shoes: DV by Dolce Vita
The thirfted striped shirt strikes again! I wore this the last day of our trip. I love the pattern mixing in this outfit. I read awhile ago that stripes and floral prints work well together, so I figured i’d give it a go with this outfit. I really like how it turned out and I think it helps that both patterns are also in the same color family. I wanted something easy and comfortable to wear on the last day of our trip and this worked perfectly. I didn’t feel like doing my hair so I pulled it up into a top knot. I’m not 100% sure about the top knot though, I think if it were back a little more I’d like it more. Anyway I really like this outfit and have another shirt that is also blue and white that I’ll probably pair with this skirt in a future post. Anyway that’s all for now!

Taliesin Outfit #1

Shirt and Skirt:: Thrifted  Earrings: PLNDR  Belt: Target  Sunnies: Forever 21  Shoes: DV by Dolce Vita
This is my outfit from the first day of our Taliesin trip. I’m only going to post two of the outfits I wore on the trip so I can move on to more recent outfits. This is the outfit I wore the first full day of the trip. I was going to save it for the tour of Taliesin but I felt like wearing it the day before, so I did. I wore this outfit awhile ago with a gold necklace instead of earrings and I think I like that better, adds more interest to the shirt. That said I really like this outfit, there’s something easy yet chic about it that appeals to me.
Anyway I’m trying to save some money so I’m gonna try and not shop so much (or at all if I can) this month and possibly into the next. I have enough summer clothes to last until the end of the season so I’m going to try and post more outfit posts and fewer thrift finds. I’m excited to do it though, since I still have a lot of summer outfits to show you all!

America, Fuck Yeah!

Shirt, Shoes & Skirt: Thrifted   Earrings:PLNDR
Today, as you may have known, is the fourth of July. Unfortunately I had to work today, but I get time and a half and we close early so I can still see the fireworks. The fourth is one of my favorite holidays, I’m really not sure why. Maybe it’s that it’s one of the few holidays during the summer, maybe it’s the BBQ’s, maybe it’s that sense of collective patriotism or maybe I’m just really into fireworks. Either way I’m a big fan of the fourth . I decided to be corny this year and dress super patriotically. It’s been incredibly hot here all week and this hot humid weather is supposed to last the whole week, so I knew pants or anything too hot was a no go. I found this blue and white striped shirt a couple weeks ago while thrifting and knew it would be perfect to wear on the 4th. The only problem is for some reason I don’t own a lot of red, so last week I thrifted this skirt and shortened it just for today. Since thrifting a similar style skirt earlier this year I’ve been kind of obsessed with these button front skirts. Unfortunately most of the ones you find at thrift stores are super long. Generally I’m not willing to shell out too much on something I have to tailor since I ‘m most likely not going to get it professionally tailored and I could totally mess it up. But it was a 50% off day so the skirt cost about a dollar, so I figured I’d give it a whirl. The tailoring isn’t perfect, but it’s good enough. I probably, most likely will change to flats for fireworks but these shoes work so well with the outfit I had to wear um.
I was trying to figure out a good patriotic blog title and America, Fuck Yeah! from the Team American World Police Soundtrack just kept coming up. If you don’t know the song it’s pretty hilarious, It’s a satire of those “we’ll put a boot in your ass” super patriotic songs that came out post 9/11. Anyway here’s the video:

Have a fabulous 4th (if you’re in the USA) and if not have a great hump day!

What I left behind

 1. This Egyptian style Plate Thing. I like Egyptian stuff but didn’t love this, so I passed.

2. Reproduction Sugar Smacks Poster. It was cool but not cool enough for me to get it.

3. This Pyrex Casserole. I just wasn’t really taken with this pattern.

4. N’Sync Bobble Heads. If you’ve been waiting for an N’sync reunion wait no more! All of the gang was back together at the Bloomington Savers, and they’re all very agreeable. I was never really into boy bands in my youth but this gave me a tinge of nostalgia, especially since I recently found a school picture of my friend from middle school on the back of which she told me to “stay N’sync,” yeah she was a big fan.

What happened to Chris’s braids. I think these are from the “No strings attached” period.

5. These Weird Acorn/Nest Plates. I probably would never buy these but I thought they were kinda cool.

6. This Weird Fabric Apple Art. I’m not sure why it was ever made but it amused me greatly.

7. Mid Century Dresser. This dresser had a few scratches here and there but was in pretty good condition. It was only $25.00, a total steal, but I need another dresser like I need another toe. Plus, I saw this a week or so after getting my brasilia dresser and the memory of what a pain that was to move was still fresh in my mind.

8. Copco Pans. these were cool and I like the color but I don’t really need them, they weren’t cheap enough for me to do an impulse buy and I really don’t have a lot of room for retro cookware I’m not 100% in love with.

9. Tiki Style Figurines. These were cool and tiki-ish but I didn’t really know what they were and passed. Later I was looking up tiki stuff and found out they’re shot glasses, I should have gotten them. Oh well maybe next time.

10. Random Art. Ever wanted quail art made out of what looks like bird seed? yeah me neither but it was kind of cool. The flowers to the right of it were cool too but not enough for me to take them home.

11. Bird Embroidery. I liked this but when I turned it over it had been hastily taped to the frame so I passed.

12. Building Wall Art. I have no idea what these are but they were interesting enough to catch my eye. I’d be interested in seeing how someone decorates with them.

13. Bonzai-ish Tree Embroidery. I was actually going to get these but went to another section and then forgot about them and left. I still think they’re pretty cool.

14. Fish-lo-K-Tor. Can’t find fish? Well do I have the product for you!! I’m not really sure how it works and I don’t fish, but it was kind of fun and random to see at the thrift store.

15. These Cool Retro Lamps. I liked these but I don’t really have a lot of room for lamps that I don’t absolutely love.

Memorial Day Thrift Haul

Sooo I bought a couch. I know what your thinking, why? why did you buy a couch? Well it’s cute and mid century and I got 50% off, it was only $30.00. I wasn’t looking for furniture but I was at Savers memorial day and they announced that all furniture and electronics were also 50% off until 5pm. So, I casually wandered over to the furniture. I saw a cute mid century highboy dresser but it was painted black and I don’t really want to refinish a dresser I’m not in love with. I continued walking around and  looked at the chairs and couch’s and then I saw it.

Originally it was $60.00, still a pretty good deal, but with 50% off it was only 30 and It was really tempting. So I thought about it but there was one hitch, It’s too big to fit in my tiny car. I called my mom to try and get her to talk me out of it, but she didn’t. Unlike the Salvation Army, Savers doesn’t hold an item for you for 3 days, you have to pick it up the day you buy it. Savers should really think about changing that. So after lots of back and forth with my mom, circling around the couch like a vulture, giving the evil eye to people who looked/sat on it, we finally got a friend of the family to come with his van to help me get the couch home. He was across town and after the guy helping me told me why they don’t hold furniture I was super anxious about my couch. He said people take off the sold tag, buy it and the original buyer is left high dry and out $30 bucks. Luckily no one did that and my couch made it home safe.  Anyway I promise no more big furniture purchases, unless it’s Brasilia I don’t know if I can say no to that. Anyway from now on if it’s not Brasilia and I can’t fit it in my car I don’t get it. This works since what I really want to find is some cool storage so I can get rid of these two plastic storage bins in my room. Isn’t it cute though! When I looked at it part of my rationalization of buying it was that it could go in our TV room. Currently we have two chairs in there but they’re not very comfortable and we’ve gotten kind of sick of them. So, when we eventually clear out the chairs and ready the room it’ll be in there.

I also got these cool tiki style cups/goblets. I looked them up and I guess they’re from Party City, I knew they weren’t old when I got them since they’re plastic and say made in china. Vintage or not I still think they’re cool. I’m usually looking for vintage tiki stuff but these were cheap and cute so I figured what the hell. I always thought I never found any good tiki stuff at thrift stores, then while searching for tiki stuff online I found out I’ve been seeing it a lot and just didn’t know it! So if your into something it never hurts to google/ebay it.

I did find a cool Cynthia Rowley kimono-ish top but I put it and the cups down to measure my car and when I got back it was gone. I found the cups again but the shirt was gone. Maybe next time. I didn’t really find anything else memorial day, I only ended up going to two stores. I was planning on going to more but I started late and the whole couch debacle took up a lot of time, by the time I got the couch home most of the other stores I was going to visit were closed. Did you find anything good this memorial day?

*Also, I decided not to post the photos to the photo-a-day challenge everyday and instead will do a roundup of the weeks pictures every Saturday until the end of the month.

Dark Shadows

Top & Pants: Thrift   Shoes: Gifted
I wore this outfit to go see Dark Shadows with my mom. My mom’s birthday was Tuesday and she loved the Dark Shadows soap opera as a kid so we saw it as part of her birthday weekend. Unfortunately the movie was bad, I mean really bad. Not even so bad it’s good, just bad. If you really want to see it I suggest you rent it on DVD. It had some much potential, Johnny Depp, Tim Burton, Helena Bonham Carter, vampires and campy 60’s/70’s soap opera, sadly none of that made anywhere near a good movie. It was kind of disappointing. I did though finally see The Hunger Games movie the night before, which was actually pretty good, so I wasn’t too bummed. Since i’ve been trying to read more I’ve got in the habit of reading books that have recently been turned into movies. I recently finished the whole Girl with the Dragon tattoo series and the first Hunger Games book. I would be reading the second book but apparently it’s a pretty popular book and there’s quite a wait for the book at the library.

As you can see I’m currently #971 out of 1162 waiting to get their hands on the second book.

I might cave and buy the books but I think I can wait it out.  I did though get to go to a thrift store near the theater for a minute. It’s one of my favorite thrift stores and it had some good stuff but I wasn’t able to really dig in because we had to go to the movie soon. I’ll definitely have to go back. Have you seen any movies lately?

What I wore to a sweltering Art-A-Whirl

Skirt: Thrifted Top: Forever 21 Sandals: DV by Dolce Vita
I wore this outfit Friday to go to the library, do a little thrifting and attend a few Art-A-Whirl shows. We went to my best friend’s close friend Rudy Fig’s solo gallery show at the Rogue Buddha Gallery. She has a cool whimsical style best described as “a cosmic world of candy coated vixens, magical garden tea parties, and psychological purging.” If you didn’t get out to art-a-whirl last week or didn’t see Rudy’s show (and you’re in the Minneapolis area) you can catch it at Rogue Buddha Gallery until June 16th. We also visited Tarnish and Gold’s Buy Art show that my best friend was showing in along with lots of other great artists. The Buy Art show runs until the end of June so go and see it if you’re in the north east Minneapolis area. We ended the night at the Future Presence 5 show at Future Presence Gallery. It was our first time at art-a-whirl and it was a pretty fun night despite the hot and humid weather.
You may or may not remember this skirt from this post a couple weeks ago. When I got the skirt I knew how I wanted to style it for the colder months but was at a bit of a loss with what to wear with it in the summer. So, I went through my wardrobe and came up with different tops to pair with it for Summer. I came up with more than a few that I’ll definitely be posting later this summer. Although it may not look like it I’m actually mixing patterns. The top is a thinner striped top and the skirt has a cute little skeleton key print. I think they work well together, although the colors of the skirt and the top aren’t exact matches they complement each other well. The sandals may have been better if they were a neutral color, but I love these sandals soo much I just couldn’t help but wear them. I was lusting hard for these sandals last year when I saw them on karmaloop in turquoise. I loved them but I didn’t have the money to buy them. So, when I finally got a job I knew I had to have them. The only problem was they were out of season and unavailable at most stores. There were some on PLNDR and eBay but they weren’t in my size. Miraculously I found a pair on a random website and bought them, in February. So when it was finally hot enough to rock sandals I was super excited. In other words, expect to see these a lot in the coming weeks/months.
