My Five Favorite Spring/Summer 18′ Trends

Well it’s officially Spring! It may not feel like spring in most of the country but I promise it’s coming! I don’t know about you but when spring is in the air I always start thinking about spring/summer fashion. Since at this point you’ve probably seen a million and one blog posts and youtube videos on what those trends are, I figured i’d just do a run-down of my top five favorites. All of  these trends are super thriftable.  I plan to search for some good pieces at the thrifts and will hopefully be able to show you all soon.

1. Polka dots:

Polka dots are such a classic print, they really never go out of style. Because they’re such a classic print there are so many ways you style them. You can go vintage 50’s , 90’s madonna ” La Isla Bonita”, or do your own modern mix. Currently, I’m 100% obsessed with the Pretty Dress Company polka dot dress and need it in my life ASAP. I own a few polka dot pieces but I definitely need to grow my collection. Since polka dot is such a classic print you don’t have to feel bad investing in some pieces since you’ll still be able to work them into your wardrobe long after this trend cycle and the warm glow of summer is gone.

2. Pastels/ ultra violet

I’m not a big Pastel girl in general. I’ll do  a light pink but that’s generally where my taste for pastels begins and ends. So, I definitely plan on continuing to rock my millennial pink hued pieces into the season. I do want to get a little outside of my comfort zone this season, so i’m definitely seeking out pastels. This is definitely a trend I’ll be keeping an eye out for at the thrifts since i’m not sure if pastels is really something i’m going to want to invest in. Thrift stores are a great way to try a trend that’s a little outside your comfort zone. That way if at the end of the season you’re over it and ready to move on you can just re-donate the clothes and get a sweet discount coupon for whatever the next trend you want to thrift is.

3. 90’s accessories ( fanny packs, round bags, and micro cat eye sunnies)

Gucci s/s 18 runway

                      ASOS small cat eye sunnies

ASOS quilt fanny pack

                           Etsy round rattan bag

  Target Lilac Crossbody

Did you ever think you’d be into fanny packs un-ironically? yea me either. But, apparently that time has come. Of course these “fanny packs” are an updated and upgraded version of the 90’s tourist staple. They’re really more like waist bags and are a lot more “chic” than the original. You can shell out a pretty penny for a gucci version or just go to Target/ ASOS/ Forever 21 and get the same look. I’m also high key into the retro cat eye sunnies look. I love the late 90’s vibes they give me and am dying to rock them in a fabulous monochrome look that will kill the game.   But if you want to live out your late 90’s lil kim/ R&B diva fantasies like I do you can get the micro cat eyes literally everywhere for a variety of affordable price points and in a variety of colors. Round bags are another cute chic trend. You can get a variety for most stores and they’re a fun way to update you old crossbody for the summer.

4. Monochrome

I don’t know if monochrome is an official s/s 18′ trend but if it isn’t it should be. So many designers sent  down all ultra violet everything looks that you just can’t ignore the power of the monochromatic look this season. I mean least we forget that amaze green gucci flight suit. This is definitely one way you can style some of the other big trends of the season. All Red and/ or all ultra violet/ pastel looks will definitely get you brownie points for trendiness. But you can rock this trend easily with a solid color dress and some matching accessories. Or go all out and search out as many pieces in your color of choice that you can make into a sick lewk. The thrift store is definitely your friend with this trend as you can easily find pieces to match things already in your wardrobe and create a chic monochrome look on a budget. Honestly i’m so into this trend i might do a week long monochrome challenge at some point this summer.

5. Brights

I don’t hate a brights but again they’re not really something I tend to gravitate towards. I’m more of a jewel tone girl myself. But I think one of the fun things about trends is they can push you to try something outside of you comfort zone yet still make it your own. So while bright yellow is unlikely to find its way into my closet this season, I am down for adding some bright reds, blues, and even greens into my rotation. I have been wanting to add more red to my closet for some time. It’s not a color i typically go for but I do like it and think it looks good on me. So picking up a few bright red pieces will definitely be something I’ll look to do this season.  If you’re not into brights you can always incorporate the trend in different ways with a bright accessories like a bright pair of sunglasses, cute pair of shoes, or statement earrings.

Statement Tassel

Top: Thrift (Old Navy) | Jeans: Thrift (Target) | Shoes: Thrift ( Sam Edelman) | Tassel Earrings: Amazon | Bracelets: Thrift

Leave it to a bright tassel statement earring to really elevate an outfit. This very basic summer top and jeans are elevated by the addition of these fun tassel earrings.  When I got them they were a little brighter than I had imagined, but I’ve come around to them. I get a lot of complements on them when I wear them so that helps. I’m also somewhat obsessed with tassel earrings now.

The only thing I’m not so thrilled about in this outfit are the Jeans. While they seemed fine when I bought them looking at them in the pictures I realize, meh I could definitely do better. I definitely need to invest in some good dark wash jeans and some medium wash jeans without whiskers. I was meh about the whiskers before but, sometimes it takes a good outfit photo to really hate an item. But, I have been trying to simplify and clean out my closet. So these can go as well.

Anyway I hope you all are having an amazing summer! I’m trying to post more regularly. I had had two jobs for 6 months this year and just didn’t have the time to fit in outfit posts. But now i’m back down to one and will hopefully be posting at least once a week. I also have a fun trip to Seattle planned for Labor Day weekend and will be sure to post photos from that. So stay tuned!
