OOTD Low-key Valentine’s Day

Dress and Leggings: Trifted  |  Boots: Payless
I’ve always had a generally positive view of Valentine’s Day, even when I was single. But man is it hard to love that day when you’re in a relationship. Valentine’s Day, especially if you want to go out to eat, is one hell of a racket. So this year after going out for the past few Valentine’s Days we decided to do take-out and chill. It was very low-key but perfect, and cheap. lol. Even though we didn’t go out I wanted to dress up a little for the day so I wore this thrifted dress I got during the MLK day sales. I tried it on and instantly knew it’d be a perfect V-day dress, it’s sort of on theme but doesn’t scream valentine’s day. I won’t lie i’m pretty obsessed with this dress and will probably wear it out until it’s too warm to wear it.

OOTD Prince “Piano and a Microphone” Paisley Park Concert

Top & Leggings: Thrift  | Skirt: Dorothy Perkins | Boots: Payless

One of the perks of being a Prince fan and living in Prince’s hometown  is every so often he hosts random events around the cities and at his Paisley Park compound. Two weeks ago my mom got tickets for one of two “Piano and a Microphone” gala concerts at Paisley Park. Having never been to a prince concert I was super excited.  The concert was AMAZING! It was definitely one of the best concerts I’ve been to. There were two shows one at 8 pm and one at 11pm. We got tickets to the 11pm show which was much more hits based than the 8 o’clock show that, from what I gather from reviews, was more of lounge type show where he spoke a little more about why he wanted to do the shows this way and his childhood. Although I would have loved to see the first show too I am not disappointed in the least at the show I did see.  The setup was just a small stage with a (purple) piano and two candle sticks at each corner of the stage, It was all kind of … romantic. The 11 o’clock show that I went to was the more hits driven show and featured songs like Raspberry Beret, Purple Rain, Nothing Compares 2 U, How Come you don’t call me anymore,  I wanna be Your lover,  and Kiss. Toward the end of the night he got the crowd to sing along too, which was so much fun.  We got there a little late so we ended up standing behind him and saw the back of his head for most of the concert, but walked around so we still got to see him and we had pretty close view of him. Somewhat unfortunately, but predictably, cell phone photos/ recording and cameras were strictly prohibited. So the only picture I have of the evening is of the outside of Paisley Park, I wasn’t about to get kicked out! The cellphone ban is a definite generational thing. I went to see Bob Dylan with my mom two or so years ago at the Orpheum and he had the same rules, no photos. It sucks a bit since you want photographic brag worthy photos, but on the other hand it is nice to just be in the moment and listen to the music. Sometimes people get way too caught up trying to record everything and they don’t really experience the event! If you were wondering he wore a mauve/ marsala / light purple silk ensemble that resembled a funky Pajama set. He wore flared pants, a matching phases of the moon long sleeved shirt, vest, his hair in a medium afro and light up platform shoes. Needless to say he did not disappoint on the outfit front, you can see it on his Instagram Pincestagram.

Paisley Park

Anyway I wasn’t completely sure what to wear to the concert. I was contemplating buying something new but last Monday I spent way more money then planed at thrift store MLK day sales and didn’t really want to shell out money on a new outfit.  I did find some clothes at those sales but the one dress I would have worn I’m saving for Valentine’s Day. So I dug in my closet and remembered this skirt that I bought awhile ago and haven’t worn recently. It wasn’t the outfit I had originally envisioned and looking at these picture I forgot how long the skirt is one me,  I still like the outfit but next time I’ll probably go for a shorter skirt.

The concert was amazing and now I’m definitely going to have to go to more Prince concerts!

Winter break

Dress: Thrifted Leggings: Target Boots: Payless

I wore this dress a few days ago when it was warm enough to break from my usual winter pants situation.  Unfortunately right after 10 or so inches of snow were dumped on the city and we’re now gearing up for our third polar vortex. I hate winter. Anyway, I really love this dress although it’s a bit short. It may actually be more of a tunic type situation if I was average height, but at 5’1 it’s still long enough on me to wear as a dress. I’ve been dying to find more shirt dresses since finding this one, I haven’t had much luck but they’re definitely on my to find list.

Lumberjack Chic

Shirt: Target | Jeans: Old Navy | Boots: Payless
Button downs have been having a serious moment in my wardrobe lately, I’m not really sure why. I’m guessing it has something to do with extreme cold we’ve been having this winter.  Either way they’ve become my go to item for a casual day out. I got this shirt a few years ago at Target and was super excited to wear it until I walked into class the next day and at least 3 other people were wearing the same shirt. I know it shouldn’t but something about seeing so many people wear the same item kinda puts a damper on it. So I relegated it to dorm lounge wear and kept it moving. But, I could never bring myself to donate it so when plaid made a big trendy comeback last fall I knew I had to dust this baby off. Since the fall I’ve been wearing this shirt more than ever, it’s super comfy and warm which is always a plus in the winter.

Happy New Year!!

Can you believe it’s already 2014? time sure does fly when you’re having fun. 2013 was a really good year for me and I’m hoping 2014 will be just as lovely. I had to work late NYE so I spent the first hours of the new year at home in my jammies with some celebratory champagne, classy. This year I hope to focus more on my career and really get that going, that’s my number one resolution. I am also resolving to blog more! Things sort of fell off here in 2013, while I did post a bit it wasn’t nearly as much as I would have liked. My personal life got busier and I made little time for blogging, so this year I promise to balance that more and come back with more content then ever before!

Dress: ASOS Booties: Target Earrings: Ecuador Bracelet: Marshall Fields (old)

Since I didn’t go out for New Years Eve the first outfit post of 2014 is actually from 2013, go figure.  Anyway, I wore this dress twice recently so I figured I’d show you the various ways I styled it.  I wore the first look to one of my good friends from Elementary/ Middle School’s wedding. The wedding was lovely and she looked goregeous, I had to hold myself back from crying while she walked down the aisle. It’s odd when your friends start getting married, but I’m very happy for her. I had a dress all planned out to wear, then I got the invitation and found out it would be a shorter wedding in the afternoon and decided to go a bit more casual.  I thought this dress fit the bill perfectly. I’m in love with the wrap look and the cute little birds on it,  the neckline is a bit too low for most occasions but that’s an easy fix. I decided to dress it up a bit with a cute bracelet I wore to my prom forever ago, some peacock earrings I got in Ecuador, and black booties.

Dress: ASOS Boots: Payless

I also wore the dress on Christmas. I had a very busy Christmas in 2013, I went to my boyfriends mom’s house for Christmas brunch and then we both headed to my grandparent’s house for Christmas dinner. There were a lot of families, I’m pretty sure we were both exhausted by the end of the day. But it all went well and we got the meet the families part over with for the most part.  Anyway since I was meeting some of his family for the first time and wasn’t sure what everyone would be wearing I decided to go with this dress as it’s casual but still kinda dressed up. I also wore my new favorite boots from Payless. I seriously need more boots in my life. I really like this look and have recently fallen head over heels for wrap dresses, so look for more of those in the coming months.

New Year’s Eve: Happy 2013!!

Outfit without the cardi, notice the dancing glasses.

Cardigan: Vintage  Shirt: forever 21  Skirt: ASOS  Tights: Target  Boots: Payless
Sorry this post is so late, a bug is going around my workplace and I started getting sick Dec 30 and my cold only worsened until recently. So, I figured i’d spare you photos of me looking like a chapped nosed zombie. Aren’t colds fun? Anyway despite feeling a little under the weather on NYE I still went out dancing. The only thing I knew I wanted to wear for NYE was my leather skirt, so I spent a good amount of time in december trying to drum up cute tops to go with the skirt. It wasn’t until Dec 30 that I finally figured out what to wear. I had been to a couple stores but found nothing, so I dug though my wardrobe and found this killer cardigan that I hadn’t worn since prom. I love it but it’s a little over the top, perfect for NYE! It’s a little warm, as it’s cashmere, so I knew I wanted to pair it with a light weight top as i’d probably end up taking it off during the night.  The shirt is from forever 21 and is one i’d been stocking for awhile. It’s sparkly and sheer and something I would actually wear post new years eve.
I have to say i’m pretty into this outfit.  I would have worn heels but I wanted to dance, was sick, and am not a big heel wearer. So I opted for these boots instead, I think they work pretty well. Anyway this is how I rung in the New Year before my illness took over and I was carrying around a box of tissues and drinking copious ammounts of liquids. Happy 2013 everyone!
