DIY Halloween Costume Ideas

Halloween is Saturday! Can you believe that? If the holiday snuck up on you like it did me and  your still scrambling to find the perfect costume here are few DIY costume ideas you can put together fairly easily and inexpensively.
1. Beanie Baby

If you’re a 90’s kid like I was a 90’s kid you may or may not have 63 or more of these bad boys collecting dust in your parents basement. The first thing you’ll need to do is DIY a quick TY tag. A good sized piece of cardboard and some paint (or glue and construction paper) plus a ribbon or string to tie around your neck should do the trick. There are two ways to go about the costume portion. 1. You could buy a cute animal onesie add your TY tag and bam! you’re done. Or  2. you can get the basics of an animal costume, for instance wear a black top/ pant ( or a good jumpsuit) and a pair of animal ears then add the diy TY tag around your neck and you’ve got the perfect 90’s throwback costume.  Since most people have some been some sort of animal for Halloween at least once (or know someone who has) the basic elements of this costume are pretty simple and you may already have some of pieces at home. You can make this costume as “sexy” as you want with whatever you choose to be your main piece of clothing. If you want to  make it scary/ morbid you could be a zombie/ vampire/ pet eaten beanie baby to add a little more personal flare.

2.  Orphan Black Clone

If you don’t watch Orphan Black you totally should, but to put it very simply it’s a show about clones. It follows four main clones Sarah who’s kind of punk, Alison who’s preppy, Cosima kind of alternative and Helena … well she’s just kinda crazy. All of the various clones have super easy DIY costumes, especially Alison and Sarah, and all of these pieces could be found in your wardrobe or a good thrift store.

3. Cookie Lyon

Cookie Lyon Costume

I think one of the hottest costumes this year will be Mrs. Cookie Lyon. Her outrageous style is so fun and easily copied that I wouldn’t be surprised if come the 31st Cookie Sightings are everywhere. This costume is super easy to assemble Cookie never met an animal print or fur she didn’t like. If you have any of those in your closet you’re already ahead.  Leopard is probably her most iconic print so bonus points for any leopard pieces. Otherwise a nice bodycon dress, heels, a faux fur jacket (the tackier the better)  and some gold accessories will also give you serious Cookie.

4. Minion
minion costume

Minions are a big costume for kids this year but it’s also a super easy costume for adults. All you need are overalls, a yellow shirt, black gloves, black shoes and of course minion goggles (which you should be able to find pretty easily or make yourself). You can go traditional overalls or an overall dress if you want to be a little more feminine. Either way this is an easy costume thats super easy and recognizable so you probably won’t have to explain your costume all night.

Anyway  if you need any more inspiration you can check out my old Halloween costume posts featuring:  Mad Men inspired looks , Minnie Mouse, and 70’s mob wife/ Rhoda. If you still can’t think of anything youtube and blogs are full of ideas. Another quick a dirty tip is to just take a trip to your local thrift store, you’re bound to find a piece that will inspire a great costume.

Happy Halloween!!!

I hope you guys are having a great Halloween, it’s one of my favorite holidays. This year will most likely be more of the watching Halloween movies type years as i’m really not sure if I’m gonna dress up or not tonight (i’m leaving it up to my mood later tonight). So since I may or may not have a costume post later I figured I’d give you a peek into my favorite halloween costume ever!

Yes when I was about 6 I was the yellow power ranger. I LOVED Power Rangers, as did pretty much every kid my age at that time. But at the time my best friend was girly-er and definitely more of a pink ranger kinda girl, so obviously I had to be the yellow power ranger as she was the only other girl ranger on the US show. So when Halloween rolled around I had to be the yellow power ranger, there were no other options it was the yellow power ranger or death! (not really but you get the gist). Alas they did not sell yellow ranger halloween costumes. Oh they had the pink ranger, they had the blue ranger, they had the red, the green, EVERY OTHER RANGER EXCEPT YELLOW! My little heart was crestfallen.

Thankfully my mom is really into halloween and she got one of my daycare providers and my grandma to make me this costume. I even remember going to Jo Anne fabrics and getting the pattern and yellow and white felt. The only thing that wasn’t hand made were the gloves which we got at Target and made swish-y noises (like you were punching something?) when you moved the fingers.  Anyway it was the best costume ever. My best friend and I even got to walk around as the pink and yellow power rangers that year when we went to this Fox 9 halloween kid thing, it was pretty epic.

Last Minute Halloween Costume Inspiration

I’ve been meaning to do some Halloween inspiration posts but i’ve been lazy… turns out October has been a far less productive month blog wise, apologies. Anyway I figured i’d do a little post on some last minute Halloween costume ideas.  I’m a big fan of the diy costume, most of my costumes from the past few years have been made up mostly of items already in my closet. So if you need a last minute costume you should definitely take inventory of your closet and see what you already own that you can fashion into something awesome. Anyway here are a few costume ideas to spark your imaginations.

1. Bee and Puppycat

bee and puppycat

Bee and Puppycat is an online cartoon that’s pretty adorbs.  Bee’s outfit is super cute and pretty easy to copy. The only thing that may be harder to find is a bee applique and a puppycat plush.

2. Mia Wallace

Mia wallace

I recently re-watched Pulp Fiction as my boyfriend had somehow managed to have never seen it. What?? I know. He’s not a huge fan of Quinten Tarentino’s liberal use of the N-word, which I get but still. Anyway while watching I was reminded how easy yet chic a Mia Wallace costume would be as you probably have most of the items already in your closet and all you really need to buy is a wig.

3.Totally 90’s

90's Chic

Obvioulsy the 90’s is a super wide category you could be a raver, spice girl, grunge, etc. Really it’s all up to you and your inspiration.  Take out your overalls, Daisy print, slip dress, Sunflower print, Tommy Hilfiger, starter jackets etc and dress up like you did in the 90’s (or would have).

4. The returned Amy Dunne from Gone Girl (spoilers)

gone girl

If you haven’t seen Gone Girl go see it, it’s crazy. Although maybe go with a friend it is definitely a weird date movie, trust me. Anyway If you haven’t seen the movie or read the book avert your eyes! But if you have, returned Amy Dunne is kind of an amazing costume. All you need is a blonde bob wig, a box cutter, a pink satin nightie and a lot of fake blood. Then have you’re friend/husband/boyfriend dress up as freaked out Nick Dunne (with little orange cat of course) and walk around like the fucked up couple you are. Or have him walk around with his neck split and he can be zombie Desi. Win/win either way.

5. Wrong Waldo

wrong waldo

Everyone’s done a where’s waldo costume at this point so bring a new twist to the costume be wrong Waldo. You know those people in red striped clothing that you spotted from afar but upon a closer look you notice it’s a woman with a red skirt and blue top, or he’s a redhead with red and white shirt and green pants. Wrong waldo doesn’t wear the glasses maybe has the hat. This would probably be better if you had a friend going and Waldo but I think it would work either way. Or just go as waldo, whatever floats your boat.

Halloween 2013: Rhoda Fabulous/ 70’s mob wife / 70’s fortune teller

Everything Thrifted
So this post is oh say three weeks late, I’ve decided to blame daylight savings time and the lack of sun for this. As you can see I went with the “Rhoda Fabulous” look for the Halloween party. When it was all put together I think I looked more like a 70’s mob wife or 70’s fortune teller than Rhoda but I still really like it. The best thing about this costume is the only thing I bought specifically for it was the necklace, which I got at Savers. Everything else I had in my closet. When Halloween rolls around it really pays off to be an avid thrifter. Ever since I began really getting into thrifting I haven’t really had to worry too much about Halloween costumes, I’ve always got something that I can fashion into a costume. The only downside of this costume was at the end of the night I realized the seams weren’t the strongest. There was a little unraveling in the dress when I first got it but had plans to chop it up (make it into a maxi skirt) so it didn’t bother me. I totally for got about the loose seams the night of the party and ended up with seam splits along the sleeves at the end of the night. I sewed them up just in case I decided to wear the costume again but I think I’ll end up cutting the threads and going with my original plan to detach the skirt and make it into a maxi skirt. The top is ok but it’s polyester and it’s really hot. Not so much fun. Anyway I had a great time at the party and  I hope you all had a great Halloween!

Halloween Costume Ideas

I didn’t really have any plans to do anything for Halloween this year, maybe sit home watch a scary movie and hand out candy. But I got invited to a couple Halloween parties this weekend so it’s looking more and more likely that I’ll be going to at least one. Of course that also means I need a costume. I have a few costume ideas and some pieces in my wardrobe that I could fashion into some sort of costume. Although I have a good amount of items for a costume already in my wardrobe I plan to make a thrift trip anyway to see if I can find a piece for an even better costume or to add to the two I’m already considering. Assuming I don’t find anything mind blowing at the thrift store, here are some mood boards of the two biggest contenders for costumes that I could fashion out of things already in my wardrobe.

1. Rhoda Fabulous :

Rhoda Fabulous

I recently picked up a 70’s maxi dress at goodwill that came with a matching scarf. When trying to figure out a good way to style it for a costume I thought of Rhoda, you know Mary’s bff from the Mary Tyler Moore Show. Rhoda was super funky and loved a good headscarf. Apparently headscarves were big in the 70’s.  For this look I’d utilize the maxi dress and matching scarf I already own, add a funky large gold necklace or large gold hoop earrings, and large 70’s style Jackie-O sunglasses. After pinteresting a bunch of 70’s maxi dresses and Rhoda inspired looks this one is definitely the front runner for my costume.

2. Diana Ross

Diana Ross

When I say Diana Ross I’m thinking more 70’s Diana, post supremes. Ms. Ross is fabulous point blank period and a Diana Ross costume goes seamlessly with natural hair. A Good wrap dress, maybe a jumpsuit, sexy mini dress, or a long but sexy maxi style dress/ gown all work for this look. Add some long elbow length gloves,  a fabulous feather boa, Ms.Ross’s trademark curls and a some divalicious makeup with a red lip and boom, instant Diana.

Halloween Costume Ideas

Hey guys! Sorry my posting has been rather sporadic lately, it’s been due in part to my social life temporarily becoming more interesting and light being in short supply around these parts. I promise i’ll try to get my butt in gear and do more outfit posts. I have at least 4 to post! Anyway since Halloween is just around the corner, I figured i’d do a few Halloween costume idea posts for you and yours.

1. Betty Boop. Somebody once told I looked like Betty Boop, I’m still not sure if that’s a compliment or not. I never really understood Betty, to be honest, but she sure is an easy costume! All you need for this costume is a strapless red dress, Gold accessories (especially gold hoop earrings), black pumps and a garter. Do your make up super sexy, pop on a Betty wig, and Bam! you’re Betty Boop, girl.

2. Honey Boo Boo. I’ve never been good at pop culture costumes, for some reason my extensive knowledge of pop culture seems to vacate my brain every year when trying to come up with a costume. But with the crazy redneck fun of Honey Boo Boo it’s hard not to notice this gold mine of a Halloween costume. Grab a pink prom dress from the thrift store ( cut hem as needed), grab yourself a blonde curly wig, pink bow, frilly socks, white flats and your ever important go-go juice and take the night by storm, honey boo boo chile.

3. River Song.  This one’s for the nerds, y’all. As you know i’ve recently become sucked in to the tardis and am huge Doctor Who fan now. While trying to think of a good costume that would work with curly hair suddenly I had it, River Song!! River is Amy and Rory’s daughter (spoilers!) , she’s the doctors wife (I think),  an archeologist (sweetie), kinda crazy  and amazing! She’s definitely one of my favorite characters on the show.  One of my favorite River outfits is the one below, so i decided to go with that one, but there are plenty of other options to choose from if you want to be Melody Pond for all hallows eve.

4. Psy. Who doesn’t love Psy? I mean you have to be dead if you hear that song and don’t smile a little. Psy is also a pretty easy and fun costume. If you’re like me and you already have black pants and white button down all you need is a bow tie, sunglasses, blue blazer and oxfords. There are a ton of great costume ideas from that video so if Psy isn’t you cup of tea you can always be random guy in yellow suit, pelvic thrusting cowboy or one of his many backup dancers. Sexy Lady!

Dress/ Apron: Garage Sale  Blood on Dress: Ragstock Makeup: thrift Sweater: my grandma
Last saturday I participated in the 8th Zombie Pub Crawl. It was definitely an experience. The shuttle experience was less than stellar but it was pretty  fun. I don’t know if i’d go again unless I had a friend that really wanted to go, but I’m glad I went. I didn’t take many pictures there (just the one) and was running late to meet my friend so I didn’t end up taking outfit photos. So these myspaceian bathroom mirror pics of me looking like hot mess housewife zombie will have to do for now. I promise at the beginning of the night my makeup was better and I had an extra “wound” on my neck. I was a 50’s style zombie housewife, if you were wondering.

Minnie Mouse NOT Mickey!

Dress: Thrifted  Ears & Gloves: Spirit  Tights & Belt: Target  Socks: Walmart  Shoes: Mom’s from estate sale  Bow: old shirt
I’ve always loved Halloween, it’s my mom’s favorite holiday so it was always a big deal around my house as a kid. I always had a costume and some of my past favorites include: the yellow power ranger, princess Jazmin, a hippie, a witch, a genie and Velma from Scooby Doo. This year I was thinking of being a 70’s disco diva but since I didn’t want to rack up debt for a costume I decided to go with a costume I could build a little more economically. I got this dress at the thrift sore earlier this year and really like it. It’s handmade and I feel a little Minnie mouse every time I wear it, so I decided to go one step further and actually be Minnie mouse. I only had to buy ears, gloves and socks. Ironically I went to work Saturday and the “real” Minnie mouse was there posing with kids, it was fate. I had to work so I didn’t meet Minnie but it was funny to see her. I’m not much into the “sexy” Halloween costumes I can see it if you’re costume is Bettie Boop or a prostitute but sexy nemo, really? I just want to know who said “jee i’d really like to be sexy nemo but there’s no costume!” I don’t have anything against people that are into the sexy thing It’s just not me. Anyway, I didn’t really do anything for Halloween I handed out candy and watched Paranormal Activity (the first one). I didn’t find Paranormal Activity very scary and thought the ending was totally just, I got distracted from the bumps in the night by the boyfriends doucheyness.
Anyway I did end up getting a job, it’s a seasonal job at the mall, but it could turn into a longer term job and I’m just happy to be making some money even though I may be re-unemployed in mid January. Anyway I have been wearing some cute things but haven’t gotten around to posting them. I’ll also make a post about some new things I’ll be buying now that I’m making some money. Anyway hope you had a fabulous Halloween! And, if you celebrate, have a great Día de los Muertos/ All Saints day!
