New Year’s Eve: Happy 2013!!

Outfit without the cardi, notice the dancing glasses.

Cardigan: Vintage  Shirt: forever 21  Skirt: ASOS  Tights: Target  Boots: Payless
Sorry this post is so late, a bug is going around my workplace and I started getting sick Dec 30 and my cold only worsened until recently. So, I figured i’d spare you photos of me looking like a chapped nosed zombie. Aren’t colds fun? Anyway despite feeling a little under the weather on NYE I still went out dancing. The only thing I knew I wanted to wear for NYE was my leather skirt, so I spent a good amount of time in december trying to drum up cute tops to go with the skirt. It wasn’t until Dec 30 that I finally figured out what to wear. I had been to a couple stores but found nothing, so I dug though my wardrobe and found this killer cardigan that I hadn’t worn since prom. I love it but it’s a little over the top, perfect for NYE! It’s a little warm, as it’s cashmere, so I knew I wanted to pair it with a light weight top as i’d probably end up taking it off during the night.  The shirt is from forever 21 and is one i’d been stocking for awhile. It’s sparkly and sheer and something I would actually wear post new years eve.
I have to say i’m pretty into this outfit.  I would have worn heels but I wanted to dance, was sick, and am not a big heel wearer. So I opted for these boots instead, I think they work pretty well. Anyway this is how I rung in the New Year before my illness took over and I was carrying around a box of tissues and drinking copious ammounts of liquids. Happy 2013 everyone!

Birthdays are Betta in Leatha

So a little over a month ago (November 16th) I turned the ripe old age of 25. It feels good to be 25 but also a bit odd since I’m now a mere 5 years away from 30, whaa? As you know, I’ve been lusting over leather skirts since the beginning of fall. Asos had a pleated leather skirt in it’s main range that I fell in love with but at $150 or so dollars I just couldn’t bring myself to buy it. By the time I figured I could take the plunge the skirt sold out in black and was only available in navy. I like the leather skirt trend, but I just can’t spend 150 dollars on colored leather.
So in late October I decided to get an asos faux leather skirt that was only 50 dollars as a birthday present to myself. Then Hurricain sandy hit and my package never made it to my house. Asos e-mailed me and said that due to the hurricain they had to send all the packages from their NY shipper back to the UK to inspect the packages and see if they’re able to send them or not. My package was  a total goner. Luckily at that same time Asos curve put up the exact same skirt I had been lusting over earlier in the fall in their range and I just so happened to have a 25% off code, so I decided to go ahead and splurge on the more expensive skirt.
And I have to say I LOVE this skirt. It’s amazing! I’m soo happy with it and so glad I got to spend my first night as a 25 year old in this fabulous skirt. Also it’s real leather (thus the higher price tag), I just love it so. I would have worn it with these cute black booties I bought earlier that day but was worried about my feet giving out halfway through the night, as they have a bit of a heel.  I totally forgot about my knee high flat black boots, so I opted for my trusted  brown flat ones instead. I’m not in love with this outfit and am seriously looking for better tops to pair with this skirt. I should be wearing this skirt again soon and will hopefully come up with something I’m more in love with.  Anyway I wore this out on my birthday to go watch Drag Queens and dance like a drunken maniac, it was so much fun y’all. 25 will definitely be full of a lot more dancing, I guarantee it.

Ps. Anyone else read leather in the voice of stella from project runway? I. Can’t. Stop. Doing. It. Observe:

Casual Reception

Top: ASOS Jeans: Old Navy Shoes: Thrift Cardigan: Vintage Necklace: Stella and Dot
The daughter of an old friend of my mom’s got married  in mid september and had a low key reception in a local park. Randomly it happened to coincide with my first Saturday off in what seemed like forever. I figured it’d probably be pretty casual, and I was definitely over dressed, but I wanted to dress up a little and I finally had an occasion to wear this top. I couldn’t resist.  It was too cold to wear just the top so I threw my favorite fall/winter cardi on top. I seriously need more cashmere in my life, but it’s soo expensive. I mean on J crew it’s almost $200.00 for one sweater, way out of my price range. I guess I’ll have to keep a look out at the thrifts. Anyway I love this look, I’ve worn it a few times since and I always feel good in it. I also love any occasion when I can sport my favorite necklace.  I seriously need more events to wear my “fancier” clothes.

These are a few of my favorite things (this week)

1. Gabifresh’s striped dress and sneaker wedges.  When sneaker wedges first hit the runway I was skeptical, way skeptical. I like sneakers and am OK with wedges but the look of a sneaker with all the reduced comfort of a wedge didn’t really sound amazing. Then I kept seeing them and when I saw Gabi’s take I kinda fell in love. I’m still not sure I’ll be plunking down the cash to participate in this trend, but It has inspired me to dust off my sneakers and incorporate them into outfits outside of pants.

2. Nicolette Mason’s shoe collection. I’ve followed Nicolette’s blog for a couple years now and love her style. I knew her shoe collection was drool worthy but when I saw all the glittery goodness in one photo I’m even more envious of her awesome shoes. Check out her interview here with Glitter Guide.

3. This fabulous lady’s street style via the ModCloth blog. I saw this image on pinterest and immediately loved it. The cat eye glasses and the mint and polka dots, this lady has some serious style..

4. Star Trek Decor. I’m kind of a trekkie.  I’m not a super serious I speak Klingon and go to star trek conventions one, though I’d totally go to one. But I do like star trek. I’ve watched a lot of the original series and some of next generation. So I kind of love all the star trek paraphernalia I’ve found via pinterest. Most notably this awesome vintage light and these cool pillows.

5. The coolest waffle iron ever. Waffle chair anyone?

apparently it’s a prototype, Image via google images and pinterest

6.  This pineapple slicer. I love pineapple but don’t like paying extra for the pre-cut stuff and aren’t a huge fan of carving it manually. So, when i saw this I was kind of in love, I think I need one.

7. JULIA SARR JAMOIS. Her style, her hair, I love it all.

8. Jewelry from Nasty Gal.

9. This collar from ASOS. My mom has a vintage collar that I thought I could wear but it has some stains, tears, and is in need or repair. I will attempt to fix it but in the meantime this collar from ASOS is a close match to it and I’m kind of in love with it.

Gwynnie Style

Inspiration

Today I’m trying something different and linking up with the lovely ladies at Two Birds and their inspiration monday feature. Basically every week they post a photo of a celebrity and then style an outfit inspired by the photo. This week’s inspiration is a casual yet chic Gwyneth Paltrow.

My interpretation

ignore the mess in our backyard we’re in the process of moving things around/ spring cleaning

Sweater: ASOS  Dress worn as skirt & Tights: Target  Boots: Gifted

Gwyneth’s dress (skirt?) reminded me of a target dress I got a couple years ago so I wore that as a skirt and paired it with this light pink kitty sweater I got from ASOS.  I liked it because the cat on the sweater looks my cat Tang. I decided to forgo the necklace since the sweater I chose had an image on the front and a necklace would look a bit too busy. I probably could have added a few other accessories but I was in a rush when I left the house and didn’t have any time to grab any.
Since Friday and Saturday were incredibly hot I was afraid this look would be a bit too warm.. Luckily by Sunday, after a Saturday rain/hail storm, the temperature had cooled and I had to add tights. I actually really like this outfit. I would have never put it together by myself but I like it and would wear it again. In case you were wondering the random white dog in my gif is a friends dog we’re watching while he moves. His name is Famous and he’s a white German Shepard. I took my pictures outsides so I could throw the ball/spend some time with him and try out a new picture location. I think he thought all the jumping was a little cooky but he’s a good sport.

Space-y?

Friday night I went to a space themed dance party in the soon to be demolished old HQ for a local charity. Since it was space themed, and I love an excuse to dress in theme,  I was all ready to get together a cheap and easy alien outfit. Ideally if money and time had been no object I would have worn some sort of galaxy print dress/clothing item like this one rocked by Bronny of Fat Aus, alas time and money were a factor. So, my main inspiration was Karen Walker’s 2012 Sunglasses ad. I saw them on Pinterest a few months ago and immediately thought they’d be a perfect inspiration since I don’t own any overtly space-y items. I figured I’d get or make some antenna, wear some over-sized sunglasses and a white T-shirt with a black skirt and call it a day.

Unfortunately I woke up Friday feeling all kids of icky and had no desire to go to Party City and see if they had any antenna or try and make some of my own. Fortunately by the time the party was starting I felt a lot better and did end up going, but since I didn’t have any antenna I went with plan B.

OK so I couldn’t resist to add a little “space” to my pictures too.

Dress:Thrift  Necklace:ASOS  Tights:Target  Boots:Gifted

So, I wore my grey dress that’s kind of space-y (in that it’s grey?) and then accessorized. I ended up wearing my gold ASOS collar necklace with it because it seemed more space-y. I also went with boots since I was planning to dance a lot and didn’t really feel like wearing flats. I think the boots were a good idea since it made the outfit a bit more casual and they were perfect to dance in. When I got there most people really weren’t in costume. All that planning for nothing! But there were a few people dressed up,  notably two people who made impressive cardboard robot outfits that kind of reminded me of  Pokemon (sorry no pictures). I probably could have gone a lot more casual, since most people were wearing jeans, but I don’t think I looked out of place. Anyway it was a good time and reminder that I need to go out dancing more!

2011 asos purchases

2011 asos purchases

Since I’m newly re-unemployed I’m going back to my “don’t buy any new (non thrift/ secondhand) clothes until employed” pledge. I may have to cave and buy a couple pairs of pants at some point, but I’m gonna try and look for them awhile in thrift stores first. Anyway while I was still technically employed (last week) and Asos was having a sale, I decided I should go for it and buy a few last minute pieces I’ve been drooling over for a while. As you can see this year I’m all about the statement Jewelry, which is good since one of my weaker fashion skills is accessorizing. I’m hoping to step up my accessorizing game this year and, of course, channel Liz Taylor as Cleopatra as much as possible. I’d been drooling over the statement necklace ever since I saw it on Asos and since it was on sale and back in stock I decided the time was right to buy. The earrings weren’t on sale but are so cute I couldn’t resist. The mesh shirt is a bit of a departure for me, especially since it’s January and cold. I bought this black forever 21 dress a couple years ago, as a bit of an impulse buy, that I really like but it’s sleeveless. I don’t mind sleeveless but this is a short black tube dress and wearing it as is just didn’t feel very me. I’d been looking for a good sheer/mesh shirt to put under it but hadn’t found anything good, so when I saw this online I knew it would be perfect. I still have to try it on with the dress and make sure it works though. There was another item, a mesh bodysuit, on Asos that also would have worked. But, years of Dance leotards and  less then fond memories of bodysuits I wore when I was 5 deterred me from buying it. I figured this shirt would get me more mileage, it’ll work well with the dress, as a shirt with a tank top underneath during the summer and possibly with a blazer during the winter. Anyway if I hate it with the dress I can always return it and get the bodysuit (same price). Finally I’ve been lusting after this red knit dress for a while. It has a 50’s cut to it and seems a little Cleopatra to me. I think with a statement necklace and some cute shoes it’ll be fabulous. Anyway you should be seeing these in outfit posts as soon as I receive them and I’ll let you know how they are in person.

So after my few months of relatively little thrifting (gasp) I’m getting back in full gear for the new year. First though, I think I’m gonna go through my closet and see what I can donate and try to come up with creative way to wear stuff that’s I already own but rarely wear or haven’t worn yet. I love thrifting but I’m gonna try and spend as little money as possible, period, until I get another job. I’m also gonna try and be more selective while thrifting. I’m usually pretty good at this but there’s always room for improvement. So that should keep be busy for a while and hopefully drum up some content for the blog as well.

Happy New Year!!!!

via Google

It’s officially 2012! Happy New Year!!!! I hope you all had a fabulous New Year’s Eve and aren’t too hungover today. I didn’t really write down any formal New Year’s Resolution, but one goal I have this year is to post more on the blog. 2012 will be my first full year of blogging and I want to post at least four times a month if not more.

Dress: Asos  Tights and Belt: Target  Shoes: Urban Outfitters

I rang in 2012 at a friends New Year’s Eve party then came home and watched Kathy Griffin and Anderson Cooper on CNN. All in all a pretty good NYE. I knew I’d probably wear this dress on New Year’s Eve if I did anything. Thankfully the party I went to had a dress code so I wasn’t terribly over dressed. I was probably the sparkliest person in attendance, but everyone likes sparkles right?  As I’ve mentioned I go this dress as a birthday present to myself back in November. It’s a tad too big, and I should probably get it tailored, but since I don’t really have the money to pony up for a tailor I just decided to belt it and call it a day. I think it looked pretty good in the end and I was able to ring in the new year pretty fashionably, always a plus.

Sorry for the lack of posts lately. I got a new to me computer and have not been able to find the disk for my camera’s software and have been a bit lazy to use the other computer to post. But, I will definitely post my new year’s outfit and blog more in the new year.  I haven’t really acquired much fashion-y things lately. I’ve been waiting for after Christmas sales, been trying to save money and haven’t been to many thrift stores. Anyway I figured I’d give an update on the things I’ve recently bought/ received for Christmas.
1. In November after lusting after this Asos dress for a while, I finally caved and bought it as a birthday present to myself. It had been sold out in my size for a while so when it came back in stock, in my size and on a weekend when they had a 20% off coupon code I just couldn’t resist.  It’s sparkly and fun and I’m totally in love with it.
2. If you haven’t noticed I’m going through kind of a Cleopatra phase, which basically means I’m obsessed with statement jewelry and simple solid colored dresses. When I saw this necklace on A Beautiful Mess, it was just too perfect. Very Cleopatra. But, it’s a bit pricey so I asked for it for Christmas and I got it! It’s definitely my favorite gift this year and I’ll be working it into an outfit post soon.
3. As you know my mission this fall was to find knee high boots. While I’m still in search for more lovely boots I finally made a purchase earlier this month. I found these boots on Payless.com while casually surfing and immediately liked the style and price. I haven’t been able to wear them much, the pitfalls of a work uniform, but you’ll definitely be seeing them soon.
4. I finally caved and bought the Nasty Gal draped across dress. I ended up getting it in Melon, which wasn’t my first or second choice but the only color I liked left in my size. I’m still not 100% on the color but it’s pushing me outside of my color comfort zone and it’s growing on me. I do, though, love the cut of the dress and was pleased to find that the deep V doesn’t drape as deeply as shown in the above picture.  It’ll be fabulous in the summer and I’ll try to figure out a way to wear it in the winter as well.
5. This summer I became obsessed with Melody Ehsani Jewelry when browsing the jewelry section on Karmaloop. These earrings were available in the summer but by the time I got any money they were out of stock. Luckily the designer has them for sale on her personal site.  I asked for them (in gold) for christmas and got them. They’re huge but super cool and totally go with my Cleopatra phase, I mean they have king tut on them!

Anyway I hope you all had a fabulous Christmas, Happy Hanukkah or just a good December 25th. I probably won’t be posting until the New Year so I hope you have a fun New Year’s Eve and I’ll be back January 1st, 2012 with a new outfit post!

DAY 4: mini skirt

Shirt: Old Navy  Skirt: ASOS  Belt: Target  Shoes: Thrift

First of all I want to apologize for the lack of posts this month. August has turned out to be a slightly chaotic month for me so far. About two weeks ago my grandpa had open heart surgery so I was a bit preoccupied with that. He’s fine now his surgery went well and he’s back at home and eating some solid food. Anyway I have a good amount of content to post in the near future including more of the skirt challenge and a thrift haul, so stay tuned ! Can you believe summer’s almost over? It’s kinda sad really. I  like fall though, especially since I’m no longer in school and don’t have to prepare myself for impending studying/ paper writing. I’m especially excited about fall fashion,  I’ve already thrifted a few pieces that I can’t really wear until fall and am excited to get to wear a  leather jacket that I bought this spring but only really got to wear once. The only bad thing about fall is that it’s too short and eventually leads to winter, but I digress.

Anyway on to the outfit!  This is probably the only part of the skirt challenge I was a bit nervous about.  Though I’m pretty open to all skirts, the mini skirt is the one I have the hardest time with. Not because I don’t like them, I’m just not used to wearing them and I see them more as a night thing. Part of it is the length, I’m not super comfortable just yet wearing such a short skirt with no leggings or tights underneath. Anyway since I’m fairly broke and aren’t going out much it was a bit hard for me to put together a mini skirt outfit. A lot of people are able to style mini skirts casually but I just haven’t gotten to that point yet. In fact I only have one mini skirt,  the leopard one above, so that also contributes to the mini skirt dilemma. So, while trying to figure out how to style my one mini  I noticed a bunch of bloggers doing the neutral and neon trend and decided to give it a try. Since I’ve heard from various fashion talking heads that leopard print is considered a neutral and I knew I had a really bright pink shirt I could pair it I figured I’d give the neon and neutral trend a whirl. I tried to style the outfit pretty casually since I wasn’t going anywhere special and I wore my new thrifted wedges for the heels. I have to admit despite my intentions I think the outfit doesn’t look very casual and is maybe a bit more night appropriate. Anyway lets talk about the shoes for a minute. I’m kind of in love with these shoes.   I have a harder time finding cute shoes when I go thrifting. I have fairly small feet and it seems the section with my size is fairly picked over or pretty small a lot of the time. But a couple of weeks ago I found these at Savers and had to get them. I love the look of heels/wedges but I rarely ware them and am not so confident walking in them. But, these are actually pretty comfy and probably a good baby step to getting more confident with heels. All in all I’m pretty pleased with how this outfit turned out and I think I’ll be doing more neon and neutral in the future.
